The Mission List

From Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas; from debut filmmakers and veterans; in drama, documentary, animation and comedy (almost), here are 15 films I’d recommend you check out at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

All 15 will make their world premieres in Toronto. All, at the time of this writing, are available to distributors in the US and Canada. And, for me, all pursue the same simple ambition to which TIFF has committed: to “transform the way people see the world through film.”

Here’s my Mission List, in alphabetical order:

  1. BREAK LOOSE d. Alexey Uchitel, Russia
  2. CANNIBAL, d. Manuel Martin Cuenca, Spain/Romania/Russia/France
  3. CLUB SANDWICH d. Fernando Eimbcke, Mexico
  4. THE DOUBLE d. Richard Ayoade, UK
  5. THE FAKE d. Yeon Sangho, South Korea
  6. FAT d. Mark Phinney, USA
  7. FOR THOSE WHO CAN TELL NO TALES d. Jasmila Zbanic, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  8. GIRAFFADA d. Rani Massalha, France/Italy/Palestine
  9. HOTELL d. Lisa Langseth, Sweden
  10. THE HUSBAND d. Bruce Mcdonald, Canada

  13. OCTOBER NOVEMBER d. Gotz Spielman, Austria
  14. STARRED UP d. David Mackenzie, UK

If you’re looking beyond the red carpets, if you want to discover new cinema at the Festival, try these films.

I’m out.
